What is POS billing software?

And why a supermarket counter needs something different from ordinary accounting software.

POS billing software runs the counter itself. It scans a barcode, adds the item, applies the right tax, takes the payment across cash, card and UPI, and prints the bill - in one keyboard flow, without a mouse.

Accounting software records what already happened. A POS decides what happens next: whether the item is in stock, whether the batch has expired, what the customer paid last time, and whether the drawer balances at day close.
